Weather in January 2018

Post by MeteoTwischkamp » Tue Jan 16, 2018 12:17 pm

Hi, what is the weather doing where you live?

Here in Northern Germany the absence of winter weather continues- its much more like autumn at present with windy and showery conditions. So far we only had five days with frost with a lowest minimum of -4.0°C, which is the lowest winter minimum so far (December had a low of -1.4°C).

Rain meter stands currently at 63 mm, this is more or less what we get on average during the whole month.
Also no snowy days yet in January, however there is a possibility for some (short lived) snow tomorrow.

Hi !
More a winter weather here in Switzerland, above all in December, which was quite cold. January is too hot. Both months are very wet, and there was a lot of snow in the mountain. But some days the rain/snow limit was above 2000m.
And it's windy, windy, and windy ! New record yesterday since 2014, 80.3 km/h !

18th January 2018: Very windy in the southern half of the UK overnight, I think there'll be a lot of people not sleeping very well tonight because of the wind noise (like myself). Highest gust here so far 68km/h

In Texas, USA, we are averaging 20 degrees below normal for the month of January so far. We do not get much snow. We got less than an inch and the town was closed down for two days. Temperatures only get this low in our area once every five years or so.

Hi Ken,

Just looked up where you are and such a low down south not very far from the Gulf Coast is really amazing.
On the same hand, you can also get easily in the 70s or 80s F just a few days after such a cold.

Here, we have just set a new "heat record" for January with currently 12.8°C (55°F) at my station. The old one was 12.2°C back in 2007. This might sound rather low, however here at the coast temperatures are quite stable year round compared with more inland parts of Germany let alone moutain valleys, where föhn winds can push the temperature up to 20°C in January when the conditions are right.

And only a few days prior we had some snow, although it only lasted for a few hours here, it quickly turned to rain here so almost everything melted away within the same day. Just a few miles northeast of me the precipitaion remained snow throughout the day so the snow stayed until the weekend there.

Here is a picture i took at the top of the dike in the mid morning hours last thursday, just after the snowfall stopped and before it turned to rain. The tall building in the distance might look familiar to some you :D
Fact is only the lower third of it is used as a hotel, the top two thirds are mainly offices and dentists. It is also only about half as tall (including antenna) as the original Burj al Arab in Dubai.

Wow. In our part of the world we get snow/ice once or twice every few years. I am used to putting out Christmas lights wearing shorts. But not this year. We are probably 20 degrees below our average for this time of year.

Now that January is over, time for a little summary.

Temperature
Average mean temperature: 3.9°C (+2.3 K above average)
Avg Max: 5.7°C
Avg Min: 2.0°C
Absolute Max: 13.2°C (24th)
Absolute Min: -4.0°C (8th)

Rainfall
Total Rainfall: 133.2 mm (+75.2 mm above average, +129.7% above average)
Days with rain: 21
Days with snow: 5
Days with snow cover: 1
Days with thunder: 0

Wind
Highest Wind Max: 31 km/h
Highest Wind Gust: 59 km/h
Windrun: 3518.1 km

Pressure
Highest: 1033.5 hpa
Lowest: 978.4 hPa
Average: 1009.2 hPa

January was over two degrees warmer than average and also very wet with more than twice the average rainfall.
We only had five frost days and no ice days, but one day in the double digits (C) which brought a new record of warmth for January. Snow fell on five days, but settled only on one day (18th) in the early morning hours. It was also overly wet with 133.2 mm in total which broke the record for the wettest January since records began.
