Purple Air

Post by Jeffm5690 » Mon Mar 12, 2018 12:59 am

Any thoughts on a purple air block and plugin? Another user has one, and was kind enough to send his custom block, but I am having a real hard time with the configuration. It also has the user set up a new table. Not sure if there could be simpler solution :)

Especially since WD is pulling data so it must be going into the push out with the API. OR IS IT?

I've ordered it two weeks ago....good idea to show all data through a block and/or plugin.
Regards,

Alessandro

OK I will consider it, although it might take a while before I get to it.

However :D

This was a very tough one for me to decide and Im always honest so I will be now too. Given my current position at work I feel competent to comment on this.... you guys bought a toy ;) The accuracy is in only extremely narrow range of temperature and humidity combination, outside of it it is like a random number generator

I wonder if I should try the numbers on the next lottery and see if I win... 😂

Jachym,

Thank you for sharing your opinion and expertise on this. I was almost going to pull the trigger on this, but not now. If they slash the price in 1/2, I would re-consider it.

I am the author of the script. It's not that hard to configure - follow the instructions on the thread on WXForum. You don't need to use the SQL script unless your going to be logging it yourself. I have the block and script running on my site.

And I do not share Jachym's opinion of the Purpleair sensor. I for one would like to see the data where you are basing your opinions Jachym - granted they are not scientific/EPA level accurate, and If they were so inaccurate then they would never have been created by Plantower and endorsed by a few organizations. They are in the range of "good enough" for personal use.

OK, last week for example I was at a conference where 2 presentations concentrated on the comparison of pro instruments vs the most expensive "non-pro" instruments from Vaisala. The graphs were absurd. Vaisala was often off by 300-400%. The problem is as I said that the data you see in terms of accuracy etc. in the manual are LAB results. Lab results under specific temperature, humidity etc. When you then put the device outside and real conditions, in longterm it is very inaccurate. It stems from the fact of how it is actually measured, the cheaper and smaller devices simply cannot use the technology required for proper measurements. It is subjective, but I saw some objective data, enough to make my opinion about this.

We would of course love to use them as well because it would reduce costs so much and allow us to build many more stations - thats why we actually test them professionally, unfortunately the results are far from satisfactory and Vaisala was not the only non-pro one tested.

Right ok, so I can put it on my to do list, you persuaded me (persuaded me about making the block, not about the accuracy :D).

I need someone to tell me where I can find some sort of API (someone mentioned there is one) and if so, I would need somone´s login details if the api is protected by some key

If it was a bit cheaper I would even consider buying it and placing it next to the most advanced, professional station we use, one of which is right next to my office outside :D

Jachym,

You can go to https://www.purpleair.com/json and you will get all the sensor ID and thinkspeak info. You can search for mine and use if you like - it’s public. LINY Weather. I can also send you the block that another user designed (somewhat works for me) but I’m sure you can clean it up for easier configuration. Let me know - email me. Jeff

Jachym you have my permission to take my script and integrate it into a block for everyone. Solves 99% of the work :-)
Just keep a line in the credits for me.

Hi!
Thanks for the new air quality block.
Is it possible to remove temperature and humidity
They show way to off on values.

Regard Torjan

I'm a fan of this script and I have created the custom block working on a blank block of meteotemplate; you can see it at www.pusterla.net
Just adapted some graphic and changed labels into italian
I confirm that the SQL modify on DB are optionals
