Solar Eclipse - Aug 21, 2017

Hi guys,
quite a few Americans on the forum already, so I was wondering if you have any plans with regards to the upcoming eclipse. Anyone of you lucky enough to be in the total eclipse path?
I myself have seen an eclipse when I was about 10, I think it was in 1999. We had a partial eclipse here in Brno (about 92%). The problem is that those remaining percent actually make quite a difference, it did not get that dark, when we have a thunderstorm it gets much darker and you obviously had to use eye protection when you wanted to look at it (unlike the total eclipse, where for a little while you can observe it with a naked eye).
We will have a total solar eclipse here in 2134, so I will have to wait until then.

For anyone in the USA who is lucky enough to observe the eclipse, Google have teamed up UC Berkeley to collect photographs of the event. They intend to stitch images together in order to make a Megamovie.

For anyone interested you can find more information here https://eclipsemega.movie/

Hi everyone,

I take a look on my site from Montreal, Canada but it was a partial eclipse (58% max cover).

I follow the full one from the NASA Streaming....

58% is probably so low you would not notice if you didn't know.

I know even 75% is hardly noticeable. And in fact even <95% is noticeable but not a big deal, a bit darker, like before a storm.

You would see a drop on your solar radiation graph, but human eye is not so sensitive, so a difference of eg. 100W/m2 is not much.

It is only around 98% where it starts to get interesting, and still, unless you reach 100% you will not see the corona effect and it will not be dark.

It would still be interesting to see the drop in radiation and temperature people observed. My guess is that SR drop would be around 100-150W/m2, or more if you were >90%, in terms of temperature, probably not much because it only lasts for very short time, maybe 1-2 degree C max decrease would be my guess.

I was witness of a total eclipse in the North of France. I forgot which year it was, maybe it was 1999 too.
(I have no analog photo's left because I have thrown away my 20.000+ color slides recently.)
We traveled with a group of three from The Netherlands to see this total eclipse in France.

I do remember it was for me a very unpleasant experience! The Germans have a word for it: "unheimisch".
In a very short time the outside temperature dropped many degrees and all bird (and other) sounds became silent.
I never want to see such event again!

Interesting point of view, well fortunately it is not something that happens on a daily basis, btw. if you are someone who really enjoys seeing this you should move to Chile... one total in 2019 and another one just year later :D

I am planning on 2024 here. Will pass right over my vacation/summer home in the Adirondack Mountains of NY. I heard people were paying lots of cash to be on others property just to see it. Hmmmmm. Wonder how much I can make LOL...

Late to the game here, but thought I'd share anyway.

I put in 17 hours of driving to see totality in Eastern Oregon. It was definitely worth it.

Nikon D7200 with a Tamron 70-300 lens, at 300 mm. During the partial phases I used a homemade solar filter, made using a solar filter sheet, an old threaded ring, and some superglue. :)

Superb photos which i think proves the worth in driving 17 hours, by the way 17 hours of driving is impossible in the UK, you'd probably be in Germany !

Well done !
