Weather Underground STOPS API keys

Just for anyone else that uses Weather Underground.
They have stopped all support for their API keys.
I have sent them an Email requesting how we will be able to access data in the future, but have not gotten a response in two weeks. This really upsets me seeing how I have been a member and sending them data for over 15 years.

You are not along, as has been discussed here... viewtopic.php?f=56&t=1681

At this point I am just in a holding pattern, and will continue to upload to WU, hopefully while they sort things out and provide working API's to those that contribute. I did get a new API, but as of yet it doesn't work.

If it appears they will no longer provide a working API so contributors can use their forecasts on our websites, I will no longer sent data to them.... as the old laundry man said 'no ticky -- no washy'. I think they are demonstrating how short sighted they are... for now 'their' logo and brand are not displayed on my websites, which generates traffic to their sites.

I have been sending data to for over 14 years.

There is a new site to obtain a new WU api key. Give me a sec to find it.

I cannot find the email listing the new api signup site but send an email to victoria.gardner@ibm.com requesting the new site url for the process to get a new api key. It does work.

The thing is - you guys know very well I have not been a fan of WU right from the beginning. I have seen some of their practices, their messy API etc etc. This thing about canceling API keys just absolutely fits in my view about them.

What they have done is very smart. They have gathered millions of users and yes, some of them, like some of you, will stop sending data to them. However, they made deals with many manufacturers and many stations now send data to WU automatically... which is very smart because these users will remain.

It is appalling to see someone using your data and not offering anything in return, but thats just the way it is...

Hi Jachym!!!

Long time no see friend. Are you saying the new api key we get from IBM is of no use? I did get a new key but have not played with it to see if it is of any value to us. I was going to get started on that as soon as I finish some other projects I am working on in python which I am in the process of re-leaning in ver 3. I am also not sure if you have looked into the new api key IBM is offering feeders. Let me know if you've played around with it yet.

Hi,
no I have not seen the new API, but Im not sure if I want to implement it. I have said several times in the past "this is it" and this time I think they have gone too far and who knows... in a year they might delete even this new api

The new WU API forecast will produce forecast data using the new WU API Key....it just won't work with the Meteo Forecast8 block script. So don't waste your time trying the new API key in the Forecast8 block script. For one thing, the new WU forecast API uses a new URL: h ttps://api.weather.com/v3/wx/forecast/daily/5day?format=json&units=%s&language=%s&apiKey=%s&geocode=%s Note that the new URL uses a GeoCode (Lat & Long) instead of city name?

Here's an example of the new WU API Forecast data output for my units (m), language (en), API key, and Geo Code (lat,long).....

And on top of that they go offline here for hours at a time rotating through the local feeders as they did nearly a year ago. Sometimes only a few of us or none of us can be reached. When it comes back up it is different as most have noticed the almost constant changes with removals and additions to their site that must be relearned only to change the next day. I believe they are experimenting at our cost. As I said previously I will wait a month or more before I decide What to do.

Darksky and yr.No have also stopped working for me but I noticed they still work for some. At least meteoblue still works for me. We All knew when Yahoo dropped off so a matter of time I suppose.

I just gave up and cut off all my data feeds to them.
I signed up with PWS:https://www.pwsweather.com
I only used the API key to overlay the weather information onto my SkyCam pictures. Found another way to do that with Cumulus and IP timelapse. Soon as I get time to set it up.
Cumulus and Meteotemplate have been so stable for me, I almost forget to check it from time to time.

I have been quite active in the WU forums and have garnered a decent working relationship with a couple of WU people. If anyone wants to have a conversation with someone, the following person has always emailed me back;

victoria.gardner@ibm.com

Truthfully, there is not much she can do. You would think that a company as big and tech savvy as IBM would have some idea how to produce a working API but I am not sure they do.

They have within the last week moved all the PWS station data and webcam data to IBM servers from AWS. You may have noticed the tile like changes to the WU dashboard.

All I can say is that some very smart people are trying their best with what they have. I believe things will stabilize, but there are some definite bugs. I personally will be curious what they do when they start losing a big chunk of the 324,000 PWS subscribers, but in the back of my mind, I wonder if the decision makes care. The front line people are hemmed in trying to get what they have offered to even work.

And every PWS station owner can get a new API from the devices tab on their dashboard. Currently I am only using it on my watch...lol. Go Garmin!

Yep like Dehatter said... I've talked to victoria.gardner@ibm.com off and on the past year or so and most of there front line people do not know how to help yet as decisions have not been finalized. Even after a year or more. It's been a wait and see game for a long time since TWC brought WU.
