Precipitation Display Expansion

Post by WyoDog » Thu Sep 14, 2017 7:20 pm

Hi Jachym

I have a suggestion for expanding the quick view of precipitation display. First a little background info.

I live in a semi-arid agricultural region. Without irrigation, very little would grow in our area which receives an average or 6.6" (16.7 cm) of precipitation per year. When we do receive precipitation we want to know when and how much. Even a few hundredths of an inch are of interest in my area.

I use the block: ssGauges. I really like the mouse over on temperature as it displays the daily Hi, Low and trend.

It would be great if the same type of mouse over pop up could be added to the precipitation gauge. I would like it to display yesterday's precipitation, the monthly precipitation and perhaps even the current yearly precip.

Does anyone else on the forum have an interest in this?

The Rain Precipitation Summary block gives you all of that plus some under the more button. You probably already know that, but it is an alternative to what you are suggesting. Maybe Jachym has some thoughts on the mouse over idea.

OK, if I understand it correctly, we are talking about the gauges.

This of course is a nice idea, the problem is that I myself already am in a stage where I am able to tell some problems which might not be so obvious at first.

In this particular case - in case of the current conditions blocks I try as much as possible to avoid using the db because that slows it down. And in this case if you are updating the gauges frequently we want it to be as fast as possible, ideally just load whats in the current text file, no db contact.

I did include some "yesterday" data, but rain is cumulative, which means it has to be handled slightly differently and cannot be loaded as part of the other db call. Now we have one call, this would be two calls and if people use this block for updates as often as 2s (which some do), then each call can make a difference

I too watch the rain closely but for the opposite reason. We get so much and controlling water level in a few small ponds is a challenge.

So like what was already mentioned, the data is there in the rain block. I set mine to expand when the page loads so the data is always visible.

Rate
Day total
Rolling 7 day total
Monthly total
Yearly total

See link in signature if you want to see what I'm talking about.

Same here: 61.5 inches so far this year. Typically we get 75 inches of rain a year.
Currently it is the long dry season which lasts from august until december.

I have set the Interactive Graph to show Last 30 days of Precipitation.
