Alternative to Meteotemplate?

Post by WessexWeather » Wed Jun 15, 2022 5:03 pm

This post won't go down well with some of you I know but I am wondering if there is an alternative to Meteotemplate?

I've been using Meteotemplate on two of my weather sites for some five years now so know what I'm doing. Initially the support was fantastic and the template was updated frequently. It's now been languishing on 18.0 for a long time with very little input from the developer Jachym. There has been promise of a new version for some time but nothing has ever materialised.

A number of people on here have done a great job of keeping some of the non-functioning blocks updated which has spoilt some of the functionality, namely the automatic updating of blocks. Data sources continue to change and blocks stop working, and the process of keeping track of and updating these is becoming tedious.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Jachym is very involved in Meteotemplate any longer, and with each php update I am concerned things will stop working, or worse become insecure.

It would be great if Jachym passed development onto another developer who could keep the template updated, and even charge for it. But sadly, as it is I'm looking for alternatives.

Regards to all.
Regards,

Simon (WessexWeather)

Hi,

I have been looking for alternatives a long time, and I found out that MT is the best so far.

Everybody has his his own set of hardware, software, sensors etc...
MT is highly adaptable, that's it's stronghest point.

I even learned the basics about php, through this site, forum.

One point I do admitt is that updates should be posted in this forum in a separate forum catogory. There you are right.

What the most attract me in this site, that we try to help anyone. Since everyone has his unique set of hardware, software, etc..

Can you link the adress of yr site, clicking on your banner doesn't access me to your site.

Even if a new version comes around, it will soon be 'outdated', because of the uniqueness of the setup of all members.

Every site has his own issues, just go and visit wxforum, or other sites, they have the same issue.

If you encounter any dead blocks or issues, please contact the forum or me, and in a little time anybody will get you sorted.

fyi: i'm using Davis stuff, 2 airlinks, soil temp station and a ecowitt lightning device, and a meteobridge.

For me the new davisWll plugin has opened many doors, ...

these are my 3 sites.

Kind Regards,
Alex

I think we can add a few pages in the meteotemplate control panel:
- unofficial block install/setup
- unofficial plugin install/setup
- unofficial mod install/setup
so these task could be more easely completed trough the control panel ( without ftp/download/upload... )
We should set an 'unofficial repository' for this to work

WessexWeather's respectful views have served to open a debate that is not only essential but also very interesting. Thank you very much for initiating it.

Thanks also to alexvanuxem and davidefa for their opinions.

Although I am inexperienced, I have been using Meteotemplate since 2019 and, in my opinion, there are two things that should not be ignored:
1. Most likely, jachym's personal and professional situation when he started this beautiful adventure is radically different from his current situation. As a consequence, it is highly recommended that you actively intervene with your views.
2. In today's world, maintaining such a project for free and selflessly is not an easy thing to do. You need two or three volunteers to lead and support each other and, in addition, generous financial contributions from the users.

One final comment, for me, davidefa's return to the forum has been a great joy. Thank you Davide, your cooperation has been very useful. I hope to continue to benefit from your contributions.
Best regards.

N.B. My translator is not perfect enough to convey my message accurately.
