NWS Forecast

Post by nineback » Sun Dec 10, 2017 9:09 pm

When I first visit my weather page, the nwsForecast block gives a message saying data is not available. If I refresh the page the forecast will show.

Any ideas?

Hi Nineback, it showed up first time for me, would it be anything to do with your browser cache? Try clearing it and see if that helps.

Thanks Johnny. I actually thought it might be the other way around with the cache since the page will load fine after the first refresh. Since it works for you the problem must be something local.

I just checked it and it loads fine so I was assuming it might be loading from the cache,

Johnny,
When you look at my page are you seeing the NA IR+topography map displayed at the bottom of my middle column?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Now I've experienced the same problem you have, yesterday the NWS forecast and NA IR+topography map displayed perfectly okay, now neither show up. After a refresh the NWS forecast then appears correctly, but not NA IR+topography.

Then I tried the same in an Opera browser, both work - but with a refresh NA IR+topography doesn't display.

Not that you have an excessive amount of blocks, but I wonder if some sort of timeout is occurring before all the blocks have loaded their data. Maybe as an experiment save your current layout and then remove a few blocks at a time to see if the problem goes away.

Maybe some of the other fella's on the forum have some experience with this and can point you in the right direction.

This seems like NWS issue because if there was a problem in the code it would simply never load.

I have seen it before where something was unstable that was loaded from NWS

The North America Ir + topography appears to be coming from Canada and not the NWS?

If I go directly to the NWS page, http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... i5wBbQ-dTY, the forecast loads just fine. I don't know if you are parsing the results of this web page or if the NWS has another means of getting the forecast.

Hi Tom

If there was an issue with the code then it would never work. If something works "sometimes" it is always an indication with a problem in the data source or server communication. Code either works or it does not

Got it. Thanks. It just seemed a little strange that I am having trouble from two different sources. No one else has mentioned it so maybe it is something unique to my host.

This is a constant problem. Fails to load when I first open up my page but a refresh and it happens right away. I'm not sure that this is an NWS issue since it happens all the time.

Anyone else using the nwsForecast block noticing this?

Tom,

I have never seen this behavior on my page. I went to your site and the NWS forecast block loaded first time. I tried closing the page and trying it several times and it loaded each time.

For reference, neither the map or the NWS forecast loaded the first time. After a refresh, the NWS loaded but not the map. Additionally, several of the maps in the drop-down did not load after I selected it.

Sorry for the news, but just wanted you to know.

The above screenshot is fine, if you mean the red text, thats directly from NWS. That red text is not a text, it is an image (with text), it has the same URL as the original image, they basically replace the original radar image with an image with this red text, but in reality for the script it makes no difference, it is the same picture, same URL, just not showing radar, but text

Just checked Edge and ie11 and NWS worked right off. Even the map showed after a long period of time.

Chrome seems to be the least reliable in the case.

I think it is just coincidence, this cant have anything to do with browser type, not to mention that IE and Edge usually only cause problems and in the best case work like Chrome/FF/Opera
